Occupational therapists help you find ways to do everyday tasks.
We often call them OTs
When should you go to an OT?
You should go to an OT if you want to:
- get better at doing more things on your own, like:
- showering
- getting dressed
- build your skills for education or work
- take part in new activities, such as:
- sport
- art
- gardening
- get better at daily tasks, like:
- managing your money
- cooking
- using public transport
- be able to move around better:
- by making changes in your home
- by making changes where you work
- in your community.
They can also help you get assistive technology.
Assistive technology can:
- make it easier to do things
- keep you safe.
Assistive technology might be:
- an aid or piece of equipment
- a system to use.
What happens when you go to an OT?
When you go to an OT, they will help you:
- do more things for yourself
- get along with other people
- manage a problem you have with part of your body or moving around
- learn new ways to do things.
Your OT might give you:
- equipment to help you with everyday activities
- ways to calm down or help you feel okay about yourself.
Your OT might help you:
- make changes at work or in your home so you can move around better
- take part in important roles in your life, such as:
- being part of a community group
- doing a hobby – an activity that you do for fun, like dancing or sport
- being part of a friendship group.
