Dietitians help you with what you:
- eat
- drink.
They help you learn how to make healthy choices about what you eat or drink.
When should you go to a dietitian?
You should go to a dietitian if you:
- want to learn what you should eat and drink
- want to learn what you shouldn’t eat and drink
- get your food through a tube
- need help with your weight
- don’t feel like eating
- feel like you can’t stop eating
- find it hard to make or eat food
- need a special diet.
You might need a special diet to deal with:
- a health issue with your heart
- diabetes – a disease that causes high sugar levels in your body
- foods that your body can’t process the right way
- how well food goes through your body
- foods that your body reacts badly to.
For example, some people get a sore stomach if they drink milk.
What happens when you go to a dietitian?
When you go to a dietitian, they will:
- work out what you should eat to be healthy
- help you plan what you need to eat and drink.
The plan might include:
- learning about what to eat and what not to eat
- how to make food easier to buy, make and eat
- tablets or powders you can take to support your health
- a tube feeding plan.
