Purpose

Consists of four modules and will equip you with an advanced and integrated understanding of autism spectrum disorder, its impact on the lives of individuals with a diagnosis, and how you can ensure a best-practice approach.

Learning

Learning Outcomes: Outline the history of autism, including Kanner, Asperger and the DSM. Describe DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. Use appropriate terminology required for diagnostic purposes and/or scientific publications. Use appropriate terminology preferred by individuals on the spectrum and their families. Describe the autism spectrum from a strengths and support needs perspective. Outline support levels and how these can change over time, context and presentations across the lifespan. Outline the aetiology and epidemiology of autism spectrum disorder, including the presentation of social/communication issues across the spectrum and lifespan. Outline the importance of undertaking a differential diagnosis and comorbid diagnoses, including mental health problems, physical health problems and genetic conditions.
