Purpose
This workshop will provide a framework for clinicians to determine which AAC strategies and tools are the best fit for adult clients with acquired neurological conditions. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with range of AAC devices, Apps and Low
Tech AAC Options.
Upon successful completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify the components of a comprehensive AAC evaluation
- Perform a feature matching procedure
- Identify the benefits of high tech versus low tech AAC options and when you may choose one over the other or use both
- Compare various AAC options to determine the best fit for their clients
- Identify when to involve an occupational therapist in the AAC evaluation process
- Compare mainstream versus dedicated options and identify the benefits and considerations of each
- Choose relevant layouts from commercially available options
- Create and customise simple appropriate low tech and high tech personalised communication resources for their clients.
Additional Information
This workshop is relevant for speech pathologists with some knowledge or experience working with adults with acquired neurological conditions such as aphasia, Motor Neurone Disease, Multiple Sclerosis or acquired brain injury.
Speech Pathology students who have undertaken relevant lectures/coursework/clinical placements in adult rehabilitation, acquired brain injury or progressive neurology are welcome to attend.
